Bad discovery trail

Bats in the Huldange Tunnel

The bat discovery trail is a wonderful way to learn more about these fascinating creatures.

Since the railway operations stopped in the 1960s, the area around the Huldange Tunnel has become quiet, dark, cool, and humid — ideal living conditions for certain bat species. It is therefore not surprising that several hundred bats have now settled there. Some even use the tunnel as a winter roost.

So far, 13 different species have been recorded, including the Noctule bat, Bechstein’s bat, and the Pond bat — three species protected under the EU Habitats Directive. The tunnel is therefore an important breeding and shelter site for bats and is one of the few underground roosts in northern Luxembourg.
