Bats in the Huldange Tunnel

The bat discovery trail is a great way to explore and learn more about these fascinating creatures.

Since the cessation of railway operations in the 1960s, it has been quiet, dark, cool, and humid around the Huldange Tunnel. These are ideal living conditions for certain species of bats. It is therefore not surprising that several hundred bats have since taken up residence there. Some use the tunnel as a hibernation site.

So far, 13 different species have been identified, including the Greater Horseshoe Bat, the Bechstein's Bat, and the Soprano Pipistrelle, three species that are protected under the Habitats Directive. The tunnel is thus of great importance as a breeding site and as a roost for bats. It is one of the few underground habitats in the northern part of Luxembourg.
